The best part about visiting the Exumas is the ease of island hopping. This archipalego consists of over 365 islands and cays in the glistening aquamarine ocean. The beaches are unspoilt and beyond spectacular, some of which are completely unstepped on! All the beaches have beautiful white sand that contrasts so well against the 50 shades of blue of the water.
One of the top must do’s on my list was to swim with the nurse sharks in Compass Cay! I had seen countless photos and articles about this once-in-a-lifetime experience and was so keen to do it. Nurse Sharks are bottom feeders and appear to sit down on the bottom of the shallows. The sharks are taken care of and fed by the marina workers and are so accustomed to humans that they are now considered “pet sharks”. I’ll admit the first time I walked down to pet the sharkies I was quite nervous, but it took me just a minute to get comfortable with them and within a few minutes I was so lucky to be greeted by all the other fellas in the water! This was a moment I will cherish and remember for life, it was truly truly incredible.
When we visited it was almost high tide (which was precisely what I was hoping for!), cos the sharks often come and rest at the pier. There are also tons of fish, so snorkeling in these waters is also a popular thing to do. During low tide, the water is so shallow that you can actually stand in the waist deep waters and float among the sharks! This is definitely one of my fave posts to date so I am warning you right away for the many photos to follow in this post ;)!
The marina in Compass Cay was also so adorable, it had colorful driftwood boards all over it signed by boaters and visitors with messages. I loved this idea.
After Compass Cay, we ventured out to go sandbar hopping! The exumas have plenty of sandbars among them, which are basically strips of sand in the water, some miles long! This one that we stopped at was so perfect. When we first arrived there was a small patch of sand surrounded by water. By the time we took some photos and soaked in all the beauty of this stunning paradise, the tide had slowly rolled in to shin level.
Lying in this supersoft sands, while the tide gently rolled in was so so relaxing! I wanted to lay there forever!
How beautiful is this starfish! Literally two minutes before we found this beauty I was telling Anush how I wish I could see a starfish and then he appeared out of nowhere ! Seems apt to say – wishing upon a “sea” star right :)?!
As for my outfit of the day, since we were at sea all day, I wanted to be comfy and beachy. This Tori Praver suit from Bikini.com couldn’t have been more perfect! The smocked fit is super comfy and flattering at the same time. I love the high neck design of the top and the mint color of the suit, which matched the aqua waters so well. I chose this blue Show me your Mumu tie dye tshirt dress which was so easy to throw on and take off throughout the day whenever I wanted. And my raffia Kayu tote was the best beach bag to stash all our essentials for our boat excursion.
Jumping for joy because….there is no doubt that this was possibly one of the best days of our lives!
