Swimming with Pigs

No visit to the Exumas is complete before a visit to Pig Island, where you can cross off Swimming with Pigs off your bucket list! This is something I have been wanting to do since forever, and my experience here was beyond amazing. Pig Island also called Big Major Cay is an uninhabited island inhabited by these cute feral pigs. How did the pigs actually get there? Well, there are several theories that run around – one which says they were survivors of a shipwreck, another which says they were kept there by the locals as a tourist attraction and several other theories. But whatever the origin might be, there is no denying that this unique (and adorable!) phenomenon of the pigs living like tropical beach bums on a Caribbean island is SO fascinating!

These pigs have the life really – all they do is eat, sleep, beach, repeat! They are fed by the locals and tourists that visit the island. Pig island is right next door to Staniel Cay, so it was a super short 10 min boat ride to get to this beach. There are about 20 pigs and piglets  on the island and they are quite friendly, the moment they see a boat pulling in, they swim up to greet visitors that bring them treats. Oh yeah, food is their best friend! We took some bread and bottled water for the pigs (so funny, but they love bottled water haha!).  My favorite part was hanging out with the little piglets , they were extremely cute. Look at this guy, a round full belly, sandy snout and all – I just cant handle it!
